Craig's Current - Garner Road Construction Supplemental

The final stages of the Garner Road watermain project are set to resume in the upcoming weeks. This is a summary of work you can expect over the coming months. As a reminder, construction projects are managed by City Staff, not Councillors. City Council’s role is to oversee and approve annual capital budgets and it is the role of Staff to execute the approved projects. I commit to keeping the public informed of significant projects and providing ongoing updates as they progress.

I understand that Garner Rd construction has been frustrating for many residents and results in traffic congestion. Although this is a necessary project planned many years ago, I have stressed these concerns to the project team and have received a commitment to continue to work with the contractor to expedite the completion as quickly as possible. Currently, the contract end date is December 2025; however, staff are confident that the project will be completed far ahead of this date.

I am also keenly aware of the impact of this project on local businesses. Staff will be reinstalling signage indicating that local businesses remain open. Businesses owners with additional concerns should contact the Project Manager, Tania DiCampli by emailing [email protected].

Residents are encouraged to use the project StoryMap for ongoing updates. Any questions about the scope of work, timelines, or to raise concerns can be directed to the Construction Services team by emailing [email protected] or by calling 905-546-4313.

This is the latest update on Garner Rd construction:

1. Between Panabaker Drive and Hamilton Drive
Beginning February 18th , 2025, there will be a full closure of this section of Garner Road to facilitate the removal of the sheet piling that was previously installed and to reconstruct the road. The size of the equipment involved in the removal of the sheet piling requires the full closure of the road. This work is expected to be completed within 4 weeks and is subject to revision pending any unforeseen challenges.

 2. Between the Highway 6 off-ramp and John Frederick Drive
Beginning mid-February until late March 2025, this section of Garner will be open to westbound traffic only. Work in this intersection includes installation of watermain, valve chambers, as well as connections to the previously installed watermains, and road restoration.

3. Between Fiddlers Green and Panabaker Drive

Beginning mid-March 2025, for approximately 3 months, this section of Garner Road will be open to westbound traffic only. Work in this section includes replacement of existing watermains, water valves and valve chambers, concrete curb, trench, and asphalt roadway restoration.

 4. Between Fiddlers Green Road and Miller Drive
Replacement of the existing watermains and water chambers, replacement of concrete curbs and trench restoration of the roadway. Work is expected to begin at the end of March 2025 and last approximately 2 weeks. The traffic plan, including lane restrictions, will be confirmed closer to the start date.

 5. Intersection of Garner Road West and Fiddlers Green Road
Installation of watermain, valve chambers and connections to previously installed watermains is expected to commence at the beginning May 2025 with completion expected late June 2025. Traffic plan, including lane restrictions, will be confirmed at a later date.

 6. Between Raymond Road and Kitty Murray Lane
This separate project to install sanitary sewers continues and this section of road will remain open to westbound traffic only. This project is progressing well and is expected to be completed by March 31, 2025, should there be no unforeseen issues.

My office continues to work with Construction Services staff to address concerns related to traffic flow and the safety of pedestrians in surrounding neighbourhoods. Staff are collaborating with their colleagues in Road Safety and Traffic Operations to implement some temporary measures to mitigate these concerns. We will share an update on any plans once they become available to us.
